Caesarean section or Caesarean operation,
an operation by which a baby is removed from the uterus by cutting through the abdominal and uterine walls; hysterotomy. It is performed when delivery cannot take place through the birth canal. This operation is said to have taken place at the birth of Julius Caesar.
